Limitless potential for our region
SBIR|STTR: In-Brief
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are congressionally-mandated set-aside programs for U.S. small businesses to engage in R&D that has strong potential for commercialization. Both the SBIR and STTR programs are divided into three phases.
In 2016, the Federal Government awarded over $2.8B for these programs. Our region is currently underrepresented in these awards; with a relatively small proportionate share of funding.
An accelerator for northern indiana
LaDue Curran Kuehn and a number of our regional partners are launching an SBIR|STTR Accelerator to recruit two-dozen startups and early stage companies each year to apply for SBIR|STTR awards.
The SBIR|STTR Accelerator works with participating companies in cohorts comprised of 8 – 10 entities each, with each cohort lasting 8 – 12 weeks. The Accelerator employs a hands-on approach to mentor companies in a group setting through the process of identifying specific SBIR|STTR solicitation opportunities, forming a winning team, communicating with government personnel to better align the proposed R&D with the agency interests, understanding fundamental contracting and grant concepts, developing pricing, and drafting and submitting finely tuned proposals that meet each of the solicitation requirements. The SBIR|STTR Accelerator leverages state and federal personnel and consultants to serve as instructors, mentors and resources for the various cohort activities.
